What the RFU say: when asked what position she plays for her club Saracens she says “everywhere at the moment, scrum half/wing, wherever. I am just trying to find a position which suits me.” Being such a versatile performer can only help for someone who has been playing the sport since she was ten years of age. “It was at Park Hill Primary school in Coventry,” she said. “I played in a mixed tag rugby tournament at Old Coventrians RFC after I went along and I started playing for the club’s junior team for many years after that.”
Leanne was part of the successful England Sevens team that lifted the IRB Challenge Cup Sevens crown in Hong Kong and she was also in the team which reached the final of the same tournament the following year. “Playing in the final on the main pitch in front of thousands of people was amazing,” she remembers. “As was getting that starting shirt.”
Leanne spent her young life being schooled in the Coventry area, Allesley Primary and Coundon Court Secondary coming after her life-changing time at Park Hill. She then did a BTEC National Diploma in Sports Performance and Excellence and has picked up a Sports Massage Certificate Level 3 at Southam College. That has seen her now work in a gym with her dream to become a sports masseuse. She was also a student on the AASE (Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence) rugby academy at Moulton College.
A talented netball player, who represented Warwickshire, Leanne has played for Lichfield and Worcester under-18s and is a player with a bright future ahead of her once she settles on her favoured position on the park. She names Mike Phillips and Leigh Halfpenny as her favourite players in spite of not being Welsh.
